Cloodt, D., The Relationship between R&D Partnership Formation, Social Embeddedness and Innovative Performance: A Multi-Level Approach of Social Embeddedness, 2008, Ph.D. Thesis Maastricht University, Datawyse / University Press Maastricht, Maastricht, ISBN 978-90-5278-722-0.
The main purpose of this thesis is to gain a better insight into the relationships between a firm's formation of new R&D partnerships, its social embeddedness and its innovative performance. In line with social network theory, this thesis made use of a multi-level approach of social embeddedness by making a distinction between environmental embeddedness (macro as well as meso level), positional embeddedness and relational embeddedness. This distinction indicates different levels of a firm's social embeddedness that affect the behavior of firms as well as their performance.
These different levels of a firm's social embeddedness play a role in explaining the behavior of firms in terms of their preference for particular forms of governance of international R&D partnerships as well as in terms of their propensity to enter into future R&D partnerships. Furthermore, these different levels of a firm?s social embeddedness also play a role in explaining the performance of firms in terms of their innovative activities.
The first study investigates the effect of the macro level of environmental embeddedness, in terms of intellectual property rights protection, as well as the effect of the meso level of environmental embeddedness, in terms of the level of technological change in the sector of industry, on the preference of a company for hierarchical control in an international R&D partnership. The next study analyses the effects that a company's R&D partnership formation, its positional embeddedness and its innovative performance have on each other. The final study deals with the effect of relational embeddedness of a company, in terms of strong and weak ties, on its innovative performance.
The results show that environmental embeddedness indeed affects the preference for particular governance structures of international R&D partnerships, thereby influencing the behavior of firms. Furthermore, positional embeddedness influences the behavior of firms, in terms of newly established R&D partnerships, as well as the performance of firms, in terms of innovative activities. Finally, relational embeddedness influences the performance of firms by affecting their innovative activities.
The different levels of embeddedness are intertwined with each other. Hence, when making any strategic decisions regarding the partners with whom they might cooperate and the particular governance structures, firms should take a joint consideration of the different levels of social embeddedness into account.
